Project Hail Mary

I should have seen this in the theatre.

As everyone says, Amaze, Amaze, Amaze!

I liked this one a lot.

I’ll admit that even having this available to me for a couple months, I couldn’t find the time to watch it, and the two previous time I tried to watch it, I was to tired and started to doze off about 5 minutes in both times.

But once I was rested enough to sit down and watch it, I still had to pause about halfway because I almost forgot about the France-England 3rd place World Cup match.

I loved Rocky and everything he brought to the movie.  Whodathunk that a sentient rock would be such a smart, lovable character?  To be fair he was flying around in a spaceship when we met him.

Biggest surprise to me was Lionel Boyce as Carl.  I love that guy in The Bear as Marcus, so seeing him in this was great.

The rest of the cast was great, from the kids in Grace’s class to the scientists/astronauts he met later.

I’m no xenobiologist, but the plot seemed feasable.  Do they sell Taumoeba t-shirts?

Anyways, I’m sorry I missed this theatrically but glad I did finally get around to watching this one.

The Odyssey

Took me a couple days to collect my thoughts on this movie.

Out of the theatre reaction, I really liked this movie, a lot.  Did I love it?

A few days later I’d say yes, but initially it stressed me out as much as Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning did.  Othe than saying that the Cyclops really freaked me out, there’s not much more I can say without spoilers.

But can one really spoil a 2,700 year old story?  I mean, I can say the Circe scene freaked me out; heck, the mere mention of her name and knowing her part in the story had me tensing up.

It was like watching Apollo 13, you know how the story ends, yet you’re caught up in how it plays out on screen.

And watching the press interviews after the fact, I can see another reason I love this movie is the cast.

I didn’t recognize John Leguizamo even after I heard and recognized his voice.

I had trouble placing where I’d seen Himesh Patel before this movie.

Tom Holland, Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattenson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, all very much favorites of mine from one project or another, or multiples.

I don’t plan on watching this in the theatre again, but I’m looking forward to watching on streaming, and I hope the IMAX aspect ratio will be available to watch, because damn.

Supergirl

This is the James Gunn DCU Supergirl.

She’s different from the CW version by a country mile (maybe a parsec?).

She’s different from any other iteration of the character, as great as previous ones have been.

That said, I loved Milly Alcock in the role as much as, if not more, than I have any other version of this character.

Overall, I thought this was a good movie and I enjoyed watching it.

It was slow at parts, and Lobo felt shoehorned into the story.  Superman’s cameos made me love this version of that character even more, which is saying a lot.

The differences between the graphic novel and the movie made sense, especially with [redacted], and the ending, except the main villain didn’t seem as intimidating as he should have been.

I especially liked how they did the Argo City parts and Kara’s flashbacks.

On a scale of 1-10, I’d give this a 7.

And I also recommend reading the original source material, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, before or after seeing the film.

Thumbs up.

This is the Way

It  was good.

As my nephew said, it could easily been half a season of The Mandalorian on  Disney Plus.

The story was good, I was entertained, and there was lots that I liked and a thing or two I didn’t.

It was great to see Mando and Grogu in action again, along with Zeb and Ripley, er, Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver).

And it was simply great to see (and hear) a Star Wars film on the big screen, IMAX in the case of our screening.

Recommended if you’re a Mando/Grogu fan.

Go see it!

The Six Million Dollar Man (1973-78) — Contains Moderate Peril

I’m watching episodes of this show on and off, and I find that I haven’t seen most (if not all) of these episodes since they were first broadcast, almost 50 years ago.

We didn’t have a VCR in the mid-70s, and I didn’t watch reruns back then.  Heck, I think I only watched the Bigfoot episodes when Sci-Fi Channel picked up the show at some point during the late 90s/early 2000s.

Anyways, I recently watched “The Song and Dance Spy” guest-starring Sonny Bono.  Imagine my surprise when I recognized Bruce Glover as the main bad guy and Jayne Kennedy as one of Bono’s backup singers, or looking up the episode on IMDB.com and discovering Star Trek TNG director Cliff Bole was an assistant director on this episode.

Or that the background singer who Bono introduced as his girlfriend was actually real life girlfriend/future wife Susie Coelho.

Driver Side Rear Signal Repair

Dear Dad,

I fixed the broken left rear blinker on my CR-V.

It failed a few weeks back and when I went to the auto parts store, the tech who was going to swap it out had me test it when he removed the tail light fixture, and it appeared to work again.

Yesterday (Easter Sunday) it failed intermittently as I drove to and from our gathering, so I drove back to the auto parts store, where the cashier was able to sell me the bulbs, but they didn’t have any techs around to replace it for me, so he suggested checking online for a how-to video, which I found on YouTube.

This afternoon I followed the instructions from the video, even though it didn’t actually cover the bulb replacement itself, but I was able to figure it out and it’s all fixed.

Just wanted to let you know. 🙂

Return to the Moon

I was still in kindergarten when the Apollo 17 mission marked the last time man landed on the moon.

I don’t recall watching any of the coverage on TV, as most of my TV watching was cartoons and maybe Sesame Street.

I certainly read about the moon missions over the years, and I remember Skylab and the Apollo-Soyuz ‘handshake in space’ mission.

The first actually launch I remember seeing live was the maiden flight of space shuttle Colombia, April 12th, 1981.

I’ve seen many shuttle launches over the years, and later the recent resupply missions to I.S.S.

But today?

I’m hoping to see something that I’ve never seen before, a manned rocket, launching to rendezvous with the moon.

So you’ll excuse me if I’m found tearing up a bit later this afternoon.
